Leicestershire out-foxed
Jonathan Agnew vents his frustration over Leicestershire's C&G Cup defeat
BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew vents his frustration over Leicestershire's C&G Cup final defeat against Somerset.

Not even the most loyal of Leicestershire supporters could have had any complaints about their defeat in the Cheltenham and Gloucester final at Lord's.

A team that have built a reputation for their outstanding ground fielding, aggressive batting and niggardly bowling, spectacularly under-performed on the day.

And there must be concerns at Grace Road about the prospects of the Foxes being able to win their last National League games to secure the title.

What was Boswell doing on the park?
Jonathan Agnew
Somerset were absolutely at the top of their game.

In contrast to Leicestershire, the fielding was superb - they really did show their opponents up in this regard.

The bowling, led by the Andy Caddick's miserly example, always kept Leicestershire under pressure and although their batsmen seemed rather bemused by the extraordinary start to the match, they ran up a commanding total without ever resorting to slogging.

Falling standards

Now to the start. What on earth was going on at the pavilion end?

It is easy to feel sorry for poor old Scott Boswell, who bowled a 14-ball second over and the hearts of everyone on the ground went out to him.

But, come on, what was he doing on the park in the first place?

Shahid Afridi
Afridi: reckless and immature
If this is an illustration of how standards have fallen, then cricket in this country is in dire straits.

No doubt, people will criticise me for making that observation.

However it is harsh, but true. You would not have seen Boswell on a county's staff 10 years ago.

If Leicestershire fans had any grounds for feeling cross about their team's performance, they should vent their frustration in Shahid Afridi's direction. What an appalling, ill-disciplined, irresponsible innings that was.

Even Sir Don Bradman felt a need to play himself in, but Afridi clearly believes that he is above that sort of thing.

Agreed, the stage was set for the Pakistani opener to play his natural game - but not to approach the run chase in such a reckless, immature manner. This is a man who wants to get his test place back.

So well played Somerset, you were worthy winners.

It was just a shame that Leicestershire could not raise themselves on the day to provide the finale that the weather, the crowd and the venue deserved.
