Wells: We were second best

Leicestershire captain Vince Wells had no complaints following his side's 41-run defeat by Somerset in the C&G Trophy final.

The Midlands county were seeking their first success at Lord's since 1985, but lost wickets regularly as they tried to overhaul a Somerset total of 271 for five.

"On the day Somerset were better than us, simple as that," Wells commented.

"I felt all the way through the game that we were in touch with it, we needed early 80s off 13, but unfortunately every time we got a bit of a partnership going we lost a wicket.

"It was a good game of cricket. Full credit to Jamie (Cox) and the boys, they thoroughly deserved the win today."

Trevor Ward (54) and Darren Maddy (49) put on 85 for the second wicket, but no-one else reached 25 as Somerset's attack worked their way through the rest of the Leicestershire line-up.

It was Leicestershire's third loss to Somerset in one-day cricket this season.

"Three in a row and three carbon copies, really," said Wells.

"We lost wickets all the way through, we gave too many extra away - I think we gave 30 odd extras compared to their 10 or 11 - and they just pipped us on the day."

Wells offered words of consolation to Scott Boswell, who bowled eight wides in one over and had to be withdrawn from the attack.

"It was very disappointing for Scott because he has actually had a fantastic one-day season for us.

"He picked up four for 40 in the semi-final and today it was the biggest game of his life. It didn't come out early on for him and he struggled. The guy's really cut up about it."

Leicestershire will now focus their attention on trying to win the Norwich Union League.

"The season rolls on. We've got to regroup.

"We're top of the NCL and I think we need to win two out of three so we've got to get back on track and play some good cricket in that now."
