Somerset claimed a famous victory at Lord's after beating Leicestershire in the C&G Final by 41 runs.

It is their first silverware for 18 years following their NatWest win in 1983 and their joy was most evident as captain Jamie Cox hoisted the trophy.

Their foundation was a good one, making 271-5, with Peter Bowler and Cox sharing 67 runs and Keith Parsons weighing in with a glorious unbeaten 60.

Shahid Afridi grabbed three wickets but the game really turned on its head after he only made 20 with his blade.

Trevor Ward and Darren Maddy shined for Leicestershire but the run chase was always slightly out of reach, as Steffan Jones wrapped up a sweet victory with his third wicket.

After winning the toss, Somerset got off to an electric start, smashing 36 off the opening six overs, with Scott Boswell, in particular, on the receiving end.

The Leicestershire opener lasted just two overs, conceding 23, which included a farcical eight wides in his last over.

Marcus Trescothick skied to Afridi off James Ormond to give Leicestershire early hope, but then bounced back Bowler and Cox.

Afridi claimed three scalps, but Parsons entered the arena to crack his fine knock, ably assisted by Rob Turner, including two sixes in the final over, to achieve a respectable total to bowl at.

The stage was set for the magic of Afridi, but after an explosive 20 runs, he seemed intent on trying to hit everything into the streets of north London.

It wasn't to be, and the crowd were left disappointed as the Pakistani miscued Richard Johnson to Turner.

Ward and Maddy provided some resistance, adding 85, but then upstepped the man of the day, Parsons.

He bowled Ward for 54 and then claimed the important scalp of the skipper - Vince Wells looked dejected as he trudged off after making just three.

Andy Caddick was the only man not to get a wicket but his contribution should not be underestimated.

His ten overs went for just 33 as his colleagues all chipped in with wickets.

Jones grabbed three, while Johnson, Parsons and Dutch all finished with two apiece.

DeFreitas battled bravely, but as last man Boswell, desperate to make amends for his earlier misdemeanours, saw his stumps displaced by Jones.

It was all over and appropriately, Parsons, the only Taunton-born player in the side, was man-of-the-match.

But the triumph was down to all eleven.
