Somerset beat Warwickshire by four wickets

Somerset clinched a place in the C&G Trophy final at Lord's after an amazing win over Warwickshire at Taunton.

The home side lost three wickets in the first three overs with just six runs on the board.

But a huge 100 partnership off just 87 balls between Rob Turner and Keith Dutch gave Somerset an unlikely four-wicket victory with 24 balls to spare.

Warwicks were put in to bat but could only muster a very average 228-8 off their 50 overs.

But it looked as though it would be enough when Somerset suffered a triple early blow.

The home side however kept their faith and will now play at Lord's on 1 September.

It was a terrible start for Somerset when England's Marcus Trescothick was bowled by Dougie Brown when he had scored just four runs.

In the next over, Peter Bowler went for a duck after a brilliant catch by Trevor Penney.

And in the third, Michael Burns also registered a duck when his shot looped up for an easy catch for Penney.

Stifled runs

Somerset recovered although Keith Parsons was unlucky when given out lbw by umpire Mervyn Kitchen.

Captain Jamie Cox inspired the home side and he fell to a brilliant stumping by Keith Piper.

It brought Rob Turner and Keith Dutch to the crease and they cemented the victory with a fantastic partnership.

Earlier Warwickshire had faltered after a solid start.

They were 98 without loss at the halfway stage but their problems started in the very next over.

Mark Wagh was caught and bowled by Keith Parsons on 46 and then Dougie Brown went minutes later to leave the visitors on 104-2.

The Somerset bowlers stifled the runs and continued to take wickets.

Opener Nick Knight, who had earlier survived a bouncer barrage and an appeal for a catch, was bowled as he neared a half century.

Knight was taken to hospital when he left the crease for a precautionary scan after being hit on the helmet early on in his innings.

Warwicks coach Bob Woolmer said: "Knight has gone to hospital for a check-up as a result of the blow on the head from Andrew Caddick early in his innings."

David Hemp did not last long either. He was the victim of a great catch by Keith Dutch to leave the crease with just 11 runs on the board.

Captain Michael Powell scored quickly for his 31 but was bowled in an undignified fashion by Richard Johnson.

Disappointing

Veteran Penney kept the scoreboard ticking over as Warwicks looked for desperate runs but he skied a catch to Mike Burns to end his innings.

Somerset continued to pick up easy wickets right to the last ball when Vasbert Drakes was bowled by for seven.

Johnson was the pick of the Somerset bowlers, claiming three wickets for 42 runs in his allotted 10 overs.

But England fast bowler Andrew Caddick was disappointing. He failed to pick up any wickets in his 10 overs, which went for 40 runs.
