Worcestershire's batsmen struggled to get to grips with Leicestershire's seam attack to plunge to a 118-run defeat in their C&G Trophy quarter-final.

Set a testing 298 to win, Worcestershire's hopes largely lay on Graeme Hick's shoulders, but he lasted only six balls as the hosts offered little in the way of resistance.

Hick fell to James Ormond and to compound their woes Phil DeFreitas took two wickets in successive balls soo after to leave the hosts tettering on 69 for five.

Jon Dakin removed Australian Andy Bichel and opener Phillip Weston (40) to leave their run chase in tatters at 89 for six.

The lower order showed some fight to push their total past the 150-run mark with veteran wicketkeeper Steve Rhodes unbeaten on 56.

Earlier man-of-the-match Shahid Afridi smashed 67 off 44 balls as Leicestershire posted a sizeable 297 for nine at New Road.

But the visitors could feel they should have had an even bigger score after being 150 for three after 20 overs.

Afridi got the innings off to a scorching start when crashed six fours and four sixes in his innings, including one which lodged in the slate roof of the New Road Stand and another that disappeared out of the ground.

He took 25 off one Stuart Lampitt over, and shared in a second wicket stand of 52 with Trevor Ward (35).

But when he fell to leading edge off Almagir Sheriyar with the last ball of the 20th over the Foxes' progress started to slide.

A succession of wickets tumbled, aided by some questionable shot selection, and Leicestershire were in danger of not batting out their 50 overs when they slumped to 239 for seven with more than 11 overs remaining.

However, Aftab Habib, batting at number eight and veteran DeFreitas lifted them to a healthy total.

DeFreitas cracked a swift 35 before falling to a Hick catch in the final over and Habib blasted Sheriyar's final delivery to the cover boundary to take them to 297.

All Worcestershire's bowlers came in for some punishment but David Leatherdale's one for 20 from six overs and left-arm spinner Matthew Rawnsley took two for 49 off his full allocation helped check the Foxes' progress.

Worcestershire: W P C Weston, A Singh, G A Hick (Capt), V S Solanki, D A Leatherdale, A J Bichel, S J Rhodes (Wkt), S R Lampitt, Kabir Ali, M J Rawnsley, A Sheriyar.

Leicestershire: V J Wells (Capt), T R Ward, S A J Boswell, B F Smith, Shahid Afridi, A Habib, D L Maddy, J M Dakin, N D Burns (Wkt), P A J DeFreitas, J Ormond.
