Lewis turns down comeback offer
Chris Lewis bowls to Lancashire's Mike Atherton

Northamptonshire have failed in an attempt to persuade former England all-rounder Chris Lewis to return to county cricket.

The club approached the 33-year-old following the news that fast bowler Darren Cousins is unlikely to play again this summer because of a serious foot injury.

Lewis was willing to discuss the matter despite retiring from county cricket at the end of last season due to a degenerative hip condition, but they were unable to reach an agreement on personal terms.

"I saw him bowling in a Masters game on television and he looked good, but he would have needed to prove his fitness if we were going to take the thing further.

"In the event, it never came to that," said Northants Director of Cricket Bob Carter.

Cousins: The leader of the Northants attack

The loss of Cousins is a major blow to the county, who are currently bottom of County Championship Division One.

He took 67 wickets at a cost of just 19.67 each last summer and his total of 36 this season is more than double that of any other Northamptonshire bowler.

"We can look at a short-term signing or even at getting someone in on loan.

"But at the same time we have other bowlers at the club and it's a chance for them to show what they can do," Carter added.

The situation has been made even worse because John Blain is currently playing for Scotland at the ICC Trophy tournament in Canada.

He is expected to return to Wantage Road at the end of next week.
