Martin Speight produced his biggest innings for two years to frustrate Warwickshire as Durham closed on 284 for eight at Chester-le-Street.

Resuming on 12 for no wicket in pursuit of a target of 404, there was never any chance of Durham making the runs once Vasbert Drakes had their skipper Jonathan Lewis caught at the wicket for 32.

The visitors had a chance of victory when Neil Smith had Paul Collingwood and Martin Love caught at slip to reduce Durham to 119 for four, but Speight then put on 107 with 18-year-old Nicky Peng.

Three more wickets then went down quickly to make it 243 for seven with 14 overs left, but Nicky Phillips survived for 13 of those with his former Sussex team-mate.

Speight finished on 67 not out, made from 176 balls.

Drakes took only one wicket, but had Peng dropped three times.

But Peng hung on and counter-attacked whenever possible to make 70 off 132 balls before he was yorked by Dougie Brown.

Four overs after Peng's exit, Brown also bowled Danny Law off his pads.

When Melvyn Betts returned to have Andrew Pratt caught behind three wickets had gone down for just 17 runs.

But Drakes' lbw appeal against Speight with nine overs left was as close as the visitors came to dislodging him.

Durham: J J B Lewis (Capt), M A Gough, M L Love, P D Collingwood, N Peng, M P Speight, D R Law, A Pratt (Wkt), N C Phillips, S J E Brown, N G Hatch.

Warwickshire: M J Powell (Capt), N V Knight, M A Wagh, D P Ostler, D L Hemp, D R Brown, K J Piper (Wkt), N M K Smith, V C Drakes, M M Betts, A Richardson.
