Alistair Brown out-performed the England trio of Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe and Ian Ward to guide Surrey to victory in their Benson and Hedges Cup quarter-final against Sussex at Hove.

Brown hit 108 not out and batted through the innings to guide Surrey to 239 for seven which proved to be beyond the reach of Sussex.

Richard Montgomerie hit 83 for the hosts, but aside from the opener only Chris Adams (37) and Murray Goodwin (11) reached double figures.

Ben Hollioake was the destroyer - removing Montgomerie and mopping up the tail to finish with three wickets.

Brown was involved in three crucial run-outs, but his innings proved the difference between the two sides.

He reached his hundred in 139 balls (eight fours), but he failed to hit a boundary in the last 20 overs of the innings.

Stewart went lbw first ball to Robin Martin-Jenkins, but Mark Ramprakash (53) settled in with Brown to give Surrey the initiative with a stand of 125 in 24 overs.

Containing bowling

Ward fell to a deflected drive on to the stumps at the non-striker's end and was run out.

Thorpe, the batting star of Lord's, made only 11, chipping a simple catch to mid-wicket, and Surrey's entire team of England internationals had to be grateful to Brown's diligent effort.

Sussex were still in contention with 147 wanted from 25 overs.

Montgomerie's stand of 100 in 22 overs with captain Chris Adams (37) gave Sussex hope, but once Adams was bowled by Alex Tudor, the Sussex effort dwindled and their last eight wickets went for 48.

All Surrey's bowlers contributed with Martin Bicknell, Tudor and former Sussex quickie Ed Giddins choked the home side's run chase.
