Gloucestershire coach John Bracewell has been rewarded for his successful time in English county cricket.

The former New Zealand Test star has had his contract extended for another three-and-a-half years and been promoted to director of cricket.

Bracewell has led Gloucestershire to five trophies in just two seasons - including an unprecedented one-day treble in 2000.

This year they were crowned Benson and Hedges Cup, NatWest Trophy and National League Division One champions.

Bracewell also inspired the county to a Benson and Hedges Cup and NatWest Trophy double in 1999.

Over the next three and a half years we aim to establish the club as one of the leading county sides in England, in one day and championship cricket

He will continue to coach the first team but will now oversee the club's development and youth coaching programme.

Bracewell is delighted with his new role.

He said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed working and living in Bristol and Gloucestershire and view this extended appointment as a new challenge in my own personal development.

"Over the next three-and-a-half years we aim to establish the club as one of the leading county sides in England, in one day and championship cricket."

Chief executive Colin Sexstone said Bracewell's new role will start on 1 November.

Vital

He said: "We are absolutely delighted to retain the services of John Bracewell who has proved himself not only to be a world class coach, but also an excellent manager.

"In the new position, he will still have a 'hands-on' role with the first XI but will also ensure that the club's extensive development programme is directed to the needs of the professional game.

"This is a vital appointment in the club's long-term development plans."

Bracewell has admitted in the past that his long-term ambition is to move on to the international stage and become coach of a national side.
