The 27-year-old will replace Michael Bevan, who will be touring England with Australia next summer. "Since Michael Bevan told us he would be unavailable next year the search has been on in earnest to find his replacement. "It was well known that Murray was keen to play County cricket and his retirement from Tests made him an even more valuable player," said Sussex chief executive Dave Gilbert. Goodwin played 19 Test matches for Zimbabwe, scoring 1,414 runs at an average of 42.84, with three centuries and eight fifties, and also appeared in 71 one-day internationals.
He scored 148 not out in the second Test against England at Trent Bridge earlier this year but retired from international cricket at the end of the tour, in order to return to Australia. Although born in Harare, his family moved to Perth when he was 13 and he began his first-class career playing for Western Australia. "His excellent performances in the Test and one-day series this summer emphasise what a terrific signing he is for us," Gilbert added. Despite Bevan's brilliant batting, Sussex finished bottom of County Championship Division Two last season and were relegated to the Second Division of the one-day National League. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Cricket stories: Links to top Cricket stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
