Surrey cricket manager Chris Adams has backed England's surprise decision to call uncapped seam bowler Jade Dernbach into the World Cup squad to replace injured Ajmal Shahzad. "He'll run through brick walls for his team-mates and loves winning," said Adams.

Former England coach Duncan Fletcher has branded critics of batsman Jonathan Trott as "ignorant". Trott made his first 44 runs against West Indies off 30 balls after being accused of scoring too slowly but Fletcher said it was not a "kneejerk response", merely proof of "a rare and valuable capacity to assess the pitch and the situation and play accordingly".

Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait needs to raise his game when the tournament reaches the knockout phase, according to chief selector Andrew Hilditch, despite the 28-year-old taking 10 wickets at a cost of only 17 runs each in their first five games.

Meanwhile, Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar thinks Australia skipper Ricky Ponting should give up the job after the World Cup. "'I believe Ricky has two more years, but only if he steps down as captain. I do believe he is muddling himself as a captain and his performances are being affected. Devendra Bishoo fulfilled his father's dying wish when he made his West Indies debut against England on Thursday. The Guyanese leg-spinner's father died when he was only eight and he said: "When I got the news that I would be playing, I immediately thought about my father and what he wanted for me."
