The Dutch will be looking to repeat their 2009 World Twenty20 win over England

The Netherlands qualified for the World Cup by finishing third in the qualifying event in South Africa in 2009.

A shock win over hosts England in the World Twenty20 came later the same year, victory at Lord's remains Dutch cricket's finest hour to date.

Mixed results in one-day cricket have followed, leaving the Dutch seemingly less likely to reproduce a shock result on the subcontinent.

The Netherlands compete in their fourth World Cup in 2011, having previously taken part in 1996, 2003 and 2007. The sum of their success is victories over Namibia and Scotland, but they have a place in World Cup history for different reasons. Nolan Clarke's appearance at the age of 47 against South Africa in 1996 made him the oldest man to ever to play in the tournament, while Herschelle Gibbs hit Daan van Bunge for six sixes in an over in St Kitts in the last World Cup.

All-rounder Peter Borren played for New Zealand in the 2002 Under-19 World Cup, alongside Jesse Ryder and Ross Taylor. The 27-year-old is stronger with the ball than the bat, but is still likely to contribute runs in the middle order. An upbeat character, his resolve will be tested in what is likely to be a tough campaign.

The importance of all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate to the Dutch side is best demonstrated by bare statistics. In one-day internationals the South Africa-born 30-year-old averages a remarkable 68 with the bat and just under 21 with the ball. The Essex man has played domestic cricket in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and recently signed a $150,000 IPL (£100,000) contract with Kolkata Knight Riders. Has the ability to hit the ball a long way and bowls tidy medium pace. If the Netherlands are to have a chance of any modicum of success, Ten Doeschate needs to perform.

Visually striking in their bold orange uniforms, the Netherlands have won seven of their completed one-day internationals since qualifying for the World Cup in 2009, all of which have been played against associate nations. Drawn in the slightly stronger Pool B, their best chance of success will come when they meet Ireland, but the Irish will start as favourites. Other than that, the Dutch are likely to be the whipping boys.
