Spinner Nathan McCullum took 4-16 as New Zealand beat Pakistan by 39 runs in Hamilton to take a winning 2-0 lead in their best-of-three Twenty20 series. The Kiwis totalled 185-7 despite losing Jesse Ryder to the first ball of the game, caught behind off Abdul Razzaq. Martin Guptill (44) and James Franklin (40) shared a stand of 91 to lay the foundation for their total. Despite 46 off 30 balls by Mohammad Hafeez, Pakistan lost their way after McCullum's spell and ended on 146-9. Following the dismissal of Ryder, who gloved a leg-side catch to the keeper, fellow opener Guptill and Franklin steered the New Zealand total past 50 inside six overs, Franklin doing the honours with a six off Wahab Riaz. Guptill and Franklin were eventually removed within six balls of each other before Scott Styris made 34 off 13 balls, hitting three fours and three sixes, and Peter McGlashan weighed in with 26 from 10 deliveries. Hafeez struck a four from his first delivery but skipper Shahid Afridi was clean bowled by Kyle Mills for seven in the second over. | 606: DEBATE |
Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad took the visitors to 68 but Shehzad was caught by Styris for 15 off the bowling of Ian Butler before Hafeez was run out after a horrific mix-up between the wickets. McCullum then found Younus Khan's edge before bowling debutant Asad Shafiq for six, and McCullum continued the onslaught with the wickets of Razzaq and Umar Gul in successive deliveries. Tim Southee dismissed Umar Akmal and Riaz in the final over to leave Pakistan hanging on at 146-9. The final Twenty20 international takes place in Christchurch on Thursday.
