Brett Lee is the latest former Test player to call for a Warne comeback

Australia's shock spinning selection Michael Beer was overshadowed on his final Sheffield Shield appearance before the third Test. Legendary spinner Shane Warne has been dubbed "an unofficial selector" by one Australian writer after he endorsed the unheralded Beer in his British newspaper column, before the slow left-armer's shock call-up.

Beer is also on course for a pay rise in excess of A$100,000 (£62,291) following his Test call-up, having begun the season on a rookie contract of A$52,000 (£32,391) at Western Australia. His salary will rise further to A$210,000 (£130,811) if he earns a maiden central contract with Cricket Australia.

Cricket Australia has answered concerns after it was revealed that fielding coach Mike Young will only be with the side for two of the five Ashes Tests. A spokesman said: "Mike doesn't travel full-time with the team. He is normally most focused around one-day cricket."

Pace bowler Brett Lee has become the latest former Australian Test great to join the calls for Warne to come out of retirement. Lee, now retired from Tests but still playing one-day cricket, cites the example of Bobby Simpson who returned at the age of 44 in 1977, 10 years after his last Test, to lead an Aussie side hit by defections to Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket.
