Bangladesh claimed first blood in the five-match one-day international series against New Zealand with a nine-run win under the Duckworth-Lewis method.

The Tigers chose to bat first in Mirpur and 58 from 51 balls from Shakib Al Hasan helped them to 228 all out.

Brendon McCullum then fired seven fours and two sixes in 61 in 45 balls and put on 53 in seven overs with Jesse Ryder.

But rain intervened after 15 overs with the Kiwis on 85-4, and set a revised 210 from 37 overs they made only 200-8.

It was only Bangladesh's second victory in 18 one-day internationals against New Zealand, their 58th overall in 231 ODI matches.

Former skipper Shakib hit eight fours in his 15th one-day half century before he was the eighth wicket to fall, the final four wickets going down in four successive overs.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori struck with the first ball of his second over and was again his team's most economical bowler with 2-29 from his 10.

Ryder was brilliantly caught at short mid-wicket by Raqibul Hasan in Shakib's first over to give the slow left-armer the first of his four wickets.

Opening partner McCullum hit the slow bowler for four and six from successive deliveries and also came down the pitch to launch Naeem Islam over long-off for six more before Shakib struck twice in an over.

McCullum advanced again but yorked himself and was bowled, before Grant Elliott was lbw for nought third ball.

After the rain delay, the Kiwis went almost nine overs without a boundary before Ross Taylor smashed a short ball from Mahmudullah over square-leg for six.

Taylor made 42 before he was lbw shuffling across his stumps in the 31st over and New Zealand were unable to recover, needing 18 from the final over and only mustering nine.

Shakib understandably collected the man-of-the-match award and said: "The rain went in our favour but our bowlers bowled in good areas. Today was my day but the others supported me as well and it was a team effort in the end."

Vettori was unhappy his batsmen could not chase down their target and said: "We had a reasonable start and to restrict them to less than 230 was a good effort.

"We expected to win, but we let ourselves down in the second half of our batting effort. Brendon played really well, he gave us impetus but we couldn't back him up."
