Johan Botha took four wickets as South Africa skittled the West Indies for 231 on the first day of the Third Test.

Spinner Botha (4-56) removed the middle order trio of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Brendan Nash and Narshingh Deonarine, and later accounted for Sulieman Benn.

Dwayne Bravo (61) offered some hope for the Windies before he fell to Dale Steyn (3-37).

Captain Graeme Smith (35no) steered the tourists, who lead the three-match series 1-0, to 46 for two at close.

The hosts, who won the toss, got off to a disastrous start in Barbados when Dale Richards was trapped lbw by Morne Morkel for a duck before captain Chris Gayle dragged on from Steyn to leave his team on 21-2.

Botha, who replaced Lonwabo Tsotsobe for his first Test match appearance in over two years, was introduced at the 11th over and struck in back to back overs to take out Chanderpaul (22), who was caught by Jacques Kallis, and Nash, who went lbw.

Deonarine, who had steadied the Windies somehwhat went just over six overs later for 46 after he missed an attempted pull shot.

Seamer Kallis dismissed Denesh Ramdin (27), top-ending straight to Steyn at fine leg to end he and Bravo's brave 76-run partnership.

The new man at the wicket Shane Shillingford did not last long, going for a duck in similar fashion to his predecessor, this time Botha collecting at gully.

Bravo's time at the crease was ended when he edged Steyn to Smith at slip, signalling the beginning of the end for the Windies' resistance.

Roach, who edged off Steyn to Mark Boucher, fell two overs later for just two, and Benn, who struck two fours and two sixes in 24, was out after attempting an outrageous reverse sweep which landed in the hands of the gratfeul Hashim Amla.

Last man Brandon Bess, making his Test debut, ended on 11 not out.

Smith opened solidly for the Proteas but the Windies made an early breakthrough when Alviro Petersen (1) miscued a pull of Roach to midwicket at 17-1.

They also lost Amla before the close as he square cut Benn straight to backward point. Nightwatchman Paul Harris (two not out) survived to the close with his skipper.
