Parker leads Shifnal to the top of Birmingham League

Shropshire cricket round-up

Shifnal jumped to the top of the Birmingham League first division after a six-wicket home win over Leamington.

The visitors were restricted to 119-8, before Anthony Parker (35) and Martyn Davies (26) led Shifnal to 120-4.

Shrewsbury stayed top of the premier division, despite their game at Smethwick being washed out.

Only one game in the top division got underway. Kenilworth reached 87-1 at Wellington, before the weather intervened after just 19 overs.

Three games were completed in division two, resulting in victories for St. George's and Whitchurch, and a frustrating draw between Ombersley and Bridgnorth.

St. George's managed an emphatic seven-wicket win over Tamworth, who totalled 162-9 for nine, from the 38 overs they were allocated after the match started late. Carl Ward took 4-29.

In reply, Peter Taylor (64) and Chris Waldron (55 not out) scored half centuries as St. Georges made light work of their target, cruising to 164-3 with more than six overs to spare for maximum points.

Whitchurch, who lost to Tamworth last week, bounced back with an exciting one-wicket home win over Berkswell, with one ball remaining.

Daniel Bowen (4-50) and Maz Hasnain (3-38) shone with the ball as Berkswell sweated to 120-9, but Hasnain (65) and Amjaad Alikhan (23 not out) did enough to snatch victory for Whitchurch at 122-9.

Bridgnorth piled up 217-8 at Ombersley, thanks to Ryan Lockley's 54. The opposition looked uncomfortable on 71-4 before the rain fell.

Oswestry stayed bottom of the third division after losing to Bablake - slumping to 141 all out despite 48 from Alex Huxley. The visitors then cruised to 142-4 for a six-wicket win.

The weather interrupted proceedings in the Shropshire Premier League too, with just three games getting off the mark.

The only winners were Madeley, whose 187-7 earned them 20 points against Newtown (185-7) and cement top place in the league.

Newport rattled up 237-1, but Broseley clung on at 117-8 to eke out a draw.

Allscott made 107-9, and had Shelton crumbling at 16-4 when rain stopped play.
