Staffordshire cruised to a comfortable victory against Northumberland in their first match of the Knockout Trophy.

Staffs, runners-up in the competition in 2009, won by 123 runs on Sunday.

They posted 292-8 from their 50 overs, helped by half-centuries by Alex Stead [58] and Peter Wilshaw [55], and a quick-fire 44 from Ben McGuire.

Will Purser [2-15] removed both Northumberland openers, while spinner Gareth Morris took 3-26 to reduce the home side to 169 all out.

Staffordshire's next match in the competition is against Cumberland at Leek on 9 May.
