Ireland have awarded full-time contracts to six home-based players in an attempt to boost their prospects for the World Cup in 2011.

Alex Cusack, Andre Botha, John Mooney, Kevin O'Brien, Paul Stirling and Trent Johnston will get 'A' contract funding.

Three players with English counties - William Porterfield, Niall O'Brien and Boyd Rankin - and teacher Andrew White, will get support through 'B' contracts.

Cricket Ireland has been supported by government grants and sponsorship.

Alex Cusack and Trent Johnston had already been on full-time deals with Ireland.

The move to six contracted players will be seen as a bold move by a non-Test country.

"We all saw just how much Trent and Alex improved last year with being able to commit all their focus to full-time cricket," said Ireland coach Phil Simmons.

"It gives the players peace and security, and lets them concentrate their efforts.

"It is another step forward for Irish cricket, and shows just how serious we are in our intentions.

"It will stand us in good stead as we prepare for the next intensive 15 months of cricket in the lead up to the World Cup."
