New Zealand captain Vettori hit 14 fours in his 133-ball 99 |
Daniel Vettori fell agonisingly short of a fifth Test century on a rain-interrupted second day between New Zealand and Pakistan in Dunedin. Vettori, 40 not out overnight, was caught behind by Kamran Akmal off the bowling off Umar Gul (2-115) for 99. Earlier, the Kiwis captain had shared in a seventh-wicket stand of 164 with wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum (78). The home side were offered the light one ball after Vettori's dismissal and closed the day on 404-8. After the Black Caps began the day on 276-6, Vettori and McCullum took the score to 375 when, on the stroke of lunch, McCullum lost his middle stump to a Gul yorker. | 606: DEBATE |
Only 14 minutes play were possible after the interval before rain intervened and delayed proceedings for three-and-a-half hours. When the teams returned, Vettori moved into the 90s but looked tentative thereafter and was fortunate to survive when he edged Gul between Akmal and Imran Farhat at first slip. But Gul would strike 10 balls later, enticing the left-handed into a thick edge that was collected by the wicketkeeper. The Kiwis accepted the light one ball later, with Iain O'Brien two not out and Shane Bond, who was the subject of a failed referral by the tourists when an lbw appeal off Gul was turned down, unbeaten on eight.
