McCullum's second ODI century laid the platform for New Zealand's win

Brendon McCullum smashed 131 as New Zealand beat Pakistan in Abu Dhabi to level their one-day series at 1-1.

The Kiwi wicketkeeper added 126 with Martin Guptill (62) for the second wicket as they made 303-8 after they won the toss and batted first.

Openers Salman Butt (59) and Khalid Latif (45) gave Pakistan a good start.

But medium-pacer Scott Styris (3-23) was the unlikely hero with the ball as Pakistan fell 64 runs short. The deciding third game is on Monday.

Despite losing partner Aaron Redmond cheaply, McCullum found a willing accomplice in Guptill as he recorded his second ODI century - the only previous one having come against Ireland in July 2008 - while carving the Pakistan attack for 14 fours and three sixes.

Guptill's departure provoked a mini-collapse as Ross Taylor and Styris departed in swift succession, but captain Daniel Vettori and all-rounder Jacob Oram both provided solid support for McCullum, who was the seventh man out in the 47th over.

Butt and Latif added 77 for the first wicket before the latter was trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Vettori.

It was then Styris who ripped out the middle order as Younus Khan and Shahid Afridi were both caught by the leaping Taylor at short mid-wicket and Kamran Akmal gave the veteran his third wicket, before Butt was run out to leave Pakistan in trouble at 134-5.

The experienced Shoaib Malik and the big-hitting Abdul Razzaq threatened to take the game to the wire, but paceman Kyle Mills returned to remove Malik and Umar Gul, which effectively ended Pakistan's run chase.
