Wellington and Whitchurch go up

Club cricket

Wellington clinched promotion to the Birmingham League top flight, beating Halesowen on the season's final day.

Halesowen made 191, but Steve Lamb (68 not out) and Adam Byram (44) steered the 2003 and 2004 champions to 192-3 and back to the Premier Division.

Whitchurch went up to Division Two, bowling Newport out for 85, before Maisam Hasnain's 52 took them to 86-4.

St George's escaped the drop in Division Two. They beat Water Orton to leapfrog Penn to safety.

Hitshu Bachani took 7-24 as Water Orton folded to 78 all out, and Saints eased to 79-2 for an easy victory - and Penn's defeat by Tamworth meant that was enough for a late reprieve for the Telford side.

Elsewhere, Shrewsbury finished the season on a high, with a draw at the runaway Premier Division champions Knowle & Dorridge.

The home side hit 288-6, but Rob Foster (50), Joe Leach (44) and Tom Cox (40 not out) led the resistance, Shrewsbury finishing on 239-9.

In the First Division, Shifnal - replying to Berkswell's 283-8 - hung on at 227-9, Jonathan Mountford unbeaten on 66.

Bridgnorth had already won the Third Division title, and signed off in style. Mark MacPherson-Lees hit 103 in Bridgnorth's 232-9, before Tom Weaver's 4-26 skittled out Aston Unity for 165.

In the Shropshire Premier League, Oswestry clinched the title, winning by 25 runs at Broseley - to give Mark Robinson's men an unassailable lead with two games still to go.

Nick Williams' 39 was the backbone of Oswestry's modest 149, but it proved enough as the same player took 3-24 as Broseley went for 124.

Quatt stay second after beating Albrighton by eight wickets. Batting first, Albrighton totalled 153, but Dean Robinson and Adrian Evans were both undefeated on 68 and 56 respectively as Quatt eased to 154-2.

Much Wenlock remained third after victory at Madeley. Jamie Connelly hit 43 and Stuart Walters 36no in Wenlock's 179, with Jonathan Prince and Jamie Lloyd each taking five wickets. Madeley could muster only 112 in reply.

Newtown pulled clear of bottom-placed Welshpool (who lost to Wem) with a six-wicket success against Shelton.

Ben Mathews with 63 was Shelton's top scorer in their 197-6, but Newtown reached 198-4 with some solid individual scores - Brian Jones 38no, Steve Davies 37 and Richard Smout 37.

Welshpool went down by six wickets to Wem. Welshpool made 161 (Joe Birch 47, John Darlington 4-38), but Wem replied with 164-6 (Russell Mellings 55, Josh Gough 32no, Ernie Birch 3-33).

Ludlow beat Bomere Heath by 65 runs. Ludlow made 237-6 (Will Sparrow 62, Ryan Lockley 53), and Jack Edwards then took three wickets as Bomere were bowled out for 172 (Ian Gillespie 50).

Reman Services (244-7, Mal Serplet 87) beat Allscott (170, Ben Waters 55, Dominic Bradburne 3-34) by 74 runs.
