Knowle and Dorridge are champions

Cricket

Knowle & Dorridge made certain of their first Birmingham League title thanks to a 55-run victory at Warwickshire neighbours Moseley.

On the penultimate weekend of the season, only a mathematical miracle would have deprived them of the crown.

But, on a day when second-placed Wolverhampton were well beaten by Walsall, K and D made sure.

It now leaves Moseley needing three points at Wolves next Saturday to send Leamington down to Division One.

The bowlers stood out at Streetsbrook Road in a game where Nick Warren's 38, in Knowle & Dorridge's total of 169, was the highest individual score.

Moseley's Ashfak Hussein took 4-41. But K & D's Chris Davidson then picked up 4-12, as the home side crashed to 114 all out.

Nick James hit 37 and Attiq Chishti added 32 for K and D, while Keith Bell top scored for Moseley, with 31.

For K & D, runners-up in 2007 and third in 2008, it was a chance to finally fulfil their seemingly annual billing in recent years as pre-season title favourites.

After three successive title wins, all Walsall could celebrate was staying up thanks to that six-wicket win over Wolves at Gorway.

Shropshire off-spinner Andy Gray took 4-34 as Wolves were dismissed for 149, Worcestershire prospect Anish Kapil hitting 35 for the visitors.

But former Warwickshire all-rounder Mo Sheikh then made the decisive contribution, hitting 53, as he and another promising Worcestershire youngster Jack Shantry shared a stand of 79 for the fourth wicket.

If Moseley fail to pick up three points next week, then either 11th-placed Leamington, or even bottom club Bromsgrove, can escape the drop with a 24-point maximum from their final game.

Bromsgrove's survival chances were not helped by a losing draw at neighbours Kidderminster. And Leamington fared even worse, going down by eight wickets at Barnt Green.

Craig Wood hit an unbeaten 124 in Kiddy's 261-5 at Chester Road, bolstered by an unbeaten 58 in 25 balls from home skipper Jonathan Wright.

Bromsgrove made a brave response, finishing on 235-8, of which Jayden Levitt hit 69 and Ash Newdick 57. But only a total whitewash for Moseley next week will give them any chance of avoiding an instant return to Division One.

Leamington's prospects are almost as bleak, after being bowled out for 126 at Barnt Green.

Andy Sutton took 3-20 before Nathan Newport (55) and Gavin Shephard (50) shared an opening partnership of 77 to steer Barnt Green to an easy win.

Ed Foster consolidated his position as the Premier Division's top run scorer as fourth-placed Shrewsbury had the better of a winning draw against third-placed Kenilworth Wardens.

Foster (88) and Ryan Bishop (72) put on 166 for the first wicket before Joe Leach's 46 helped Shrewsbury post 260-7.

Wardens failed to threaten, finishing on 177-9, leg spinner Elliott Green enhancing a growing reputation with 5-49.

In the mid-table battle at Walmley, Himley went down to a four-wicket defeat.

Greg Wright (61), Danny Cox (53) and Chris Tranter (40) helped Himley to 210-9.

But, despite 4-45 from Indian overseas player Saurabh Sehgal, Chris Booth (60no) and Tariq Mohammed (40) helped Walmley win with just four balls to spare.
