Bangladesh claimed a 52-run victory over a weakened West Indies side in the first one-day international at Roseau. After the hosts won the toss, Mohammad Ashraful (57) and Shakib Al Hasan (54) helped the Tigers score 246-9 in their 50 overs as Kemar Roach took 5-44. The Windies were reeling at 8-2 after losing both openers but were given some hope by Devon Smith's 65 frm 84 balls. But left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak took 4-39 as the Windies were skittled for 194 with more than six overs to spare. It was the first ever international match played on the island of Dominica, at the new Chinese-funded Windsor Park venue. | 606: DEBATE |
A contract dispute caused 13 of the West Indies' regular players to pull out of the preceding Test series. Bangladesh won that series 2-0 against a second-string Windies side containing a mixture of former internationals and promising youngsters, captained by veteran batsman Floyd Reifer. The striking players have made themselves available for the one-day series, but the West Indies Cricket Board had already named a squad excluding the strikers. The strikers have also been left out of the preliminary 30-man squad announced for the ICC Champions Trophy in September. The second ODI in the three-game series takes place at the same venue on Tuesday.
