Cockbain joy at Ashes experience

Ian Cockbain
Cockbain is hoping to land a deal with a county

Merseyside cricketer Ian Cockbain has described his involvement in the Ashes second Test at Lord's as "incredible".

The 22-year-old former Firwood Bootle player is on a two-year contract as part of the MCC ground-staff and was England's 12th man at Lord's.

He told BBC Radio Merseyside: "It was an incredible experience.

"I managed to field for about 20 overs on the fourth day. I was really nervous at the start but I soon settled in a got a few early touches of the ball."

As part of the MCC ground staff, based at Lord's, he plays against the second XIs from the first-class counties, but is hoping to secure a contract with a county before too long.

His father Ian Cockbain Sr was 12th man for England when they played India at Old Trafford in 1979.

"When he was on the staff at Lancashire, he got to field for a whole day for England when Ian Botham broke his toe," said Cockbain Jr.
