Ryder will be sent home after being released from hospital

New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder has been ruled out of the rest of the World Twenty20 with an unspecified illness.

Ryder, who has been receiving treatment in hospital, has been replaced in the squad by Aaron Redmond, who made 63 against Ireland on Thursday.

"Unfortunately medical advice is that it would be very difficult for Jesse to regain full fitness," said Black Caps team manager Dave Currie.

"It's a real disappointment. He's one of the world's most explosive batsmen."

Redmond opened the batting in New Zealand's opening Super Eights match against Ireland and hit his 63 off just 30 balls.

"I had been playing in the Bolton League," he said. "There were a lot of 50 over matches which were rain-affected, so it was good practice for the shortened version of the game.

"We have plenty of good players. I just go out there and bat. It was important to get a good start and put runs on the board. But we all miss Jesse. He's a good man."

Ryder will return home after he is released from hospital but his absence is another blow for a Black Caps side with plenty of injury concerns.

Captain Daniel Vettori has yet to play in the tournament because of a shoulder injury, while Ross Taylor has a hamstring strain picked up against South Africa.
