After two opening draws and the third Test at Old Trafford abandoned to the weather without a ball being bowled, Australia were able to retain the Ashes with victory in the fourth Test at Headingley - Don Bradman recording his third century in as many Tests.
England were out of the series but restored pride in the final Test at the Oval after Len Hutton's 364 helped England to a remarkable 903 for seven declared. They went on to win by an innings and 579 runs.
Hutton's 364, which was a Test record at the time, still remains the highest individual Test score for an England batsman.
