The first Ashes tour since England's controversial 4-1 win in the Bodyline series of 1932-3 and Australia were still considered to have only an outside chance of of reversing the result the following year... until a comfortable win for the tourists in the opening Test proved the series was there for the taking.
England levelled in the second Test - the last Test win for England against Australia at Lord's until this year's Andrew Flintoff-inspired victory - but after draws in the third and fourth Tests (304 from Don Bradman at Headingley was a highlight), a win in the decisive final Test at the Oval returned the Ashes to Australian control.
