The third attempt to play the outstanding 2008 Cumbrian Junior League finals was yet again thwarted by weather on Monday. The conditions also reduced the number of league games completed this weekend. All under-15 games in the west of the county were washed out, although play did manage to get underway in the east. Early pacesetters are Wigton who defeated a weakened Penrith Gold team by eight wickets, Nick Watt scoring an unbeaten 26 and claiming four wickets. Appleby racked up a large total at Penrith Green including a 30 from Jordan Crawford, Appleby closing of 153-4. Penrith Green were restricted to 80-8 in their 20 overs. All-rounder Michael Slack was the Carlisle Blue match winner against Nunwick Gold as he took 3-10 to add to his unbeaten 32. At under-13 level several games resulted in really close finishes - which suggests the leagues will be closely contested this year. Lanercost were the visitors at Caldbeck and two evenly matched teams provided a nail-biting finish. Caldbeck needed 67 to win but Lanercost put up a spirited bowling performance leaving Calbeck needing six runs to win with eight balls left. They got home with a bye on the second to last delivery. Also winning with just a couple of balls to spare were Appleby who edged past Carlisle with Davidson (28) and Allinson (30) leading the run chase. | RAW STATS HIGHEST INNINGS TOTAL: Appleby u-15 153-4 v Penrith Green HIGHEST INDIVIDUAL BATTING: Bailey (Penrith Green u-13)/M Slack (Carlisle Blue u-15) - 32 HIGHEST INDIVIDUAL BOWLING: T. Carlisle have now suffered two defeats in their opening matches but are sure to be in contention as the season progresses in what looks a very competitive under-13 Eastern Premier League Great Corby and Wigton are the early season leaders in that division, Great Corby overcoming Nunwick and Wigton defeating Penrith Gold. Captain Harry Clark got Great Corby off to a good start playing well - his 27 including a six and four fours. Nunwick then took four wickets for seven runs, with Thomas Graham taking three wickets, and Mitchell Reeves added some late impetus to the innings. Nunwick had an unfortunate start with an opener being run out without facing, courtesy of a direct hit from Clark, while Jack Peat played some nice shots in his 10. Neil Little and Henry Parfitt applied the squeeze to the middle order with their six overs bringing four wickets for only seven runs. Another under-13 game going down to the wire saw Cockermouth take the points against Workington Blue. Liam Armstrong and Lewis Hull got Workington off to a good start with plenty of well run singles before Matthew Fowler and Matthew McGarry provided acceleration. The duo combined to take the home side to a decent total, including McGarry hitting a six out of the round. Cockermouth openers Dom Saunderson and Jack Spiers provided the visitors with the best possible start, Saunderson retiring with an excellent 30. Just when it seemed as if the home side had applied the brakes Will Ford and Jonny Norman provided some impetus with Norman finishing unbeaten on 15 after having also bowled very well earlier in the match. Matthew Fowler also rounded off a good game with an economical three wickets for 12 runs. Cleator under-13s currently lead the way in the west following a 35 run victory over Seascale. The Cleator bowling duo Lewthwaite and Mahone both took two wickets for two runs in impressive personal displays.
