South Africa restricted Australia's batsmen to take the second Twenty20 international at Centurion by 17 runs and seal a 2-0 series success.

Australia could not score quickly enough to reach South Africa's total of 156-5 as the home side's spinners stifled the tourists.

South Africa captain Johan Botha was the pick of the bowlers taking 2-16.

Debutant Roelof van der Merwe top-scored for South Africa, hitting 48 from 30 balls, including four sixes.

After clinching the Test series by winning the first two matches, Australia have now lost three matches in a row, losing in the third Test in Cape Town by an innings and the opening Twenty20 match by four wickets.

Chasing 157 for victory at Centurion, Australia crashed to 103-5 after 15 overs, having been 63-2 at the halfway mark.

Van der Merwe, playing on his home ground, then picked up the key wicket of David Hussey for 27 as South Africa's spinners took control, restricting Australia to 139-8.

South Africa made four changes from the side that won the first match in Johannesburg by four wickets as they look to decide on certain selection issues for the World Twenty20 in England in June.

"The new players have shown they can play at international level and have given the selectors a nice headache," said Botha.

Australia will hope for a prompt return to form when the five-match one-day international series gets under way in Durban on Friday.
