New Zealand celebrate taking the wicket of Rahul Dravid
New Zealand dominated the third day in Napier

India have a fight on their hands to save the second Test against New Zealand after being forced to follow on on day three in Napier.

Responding to the home side's huge total of 619-9 declared, the tourists were all out for 305.

Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman made half-centuries for India, but Chris Martin's 3-89 led the way for the Kiwis.

The tourists were 47-1 in their second innings at stumps, with Virender Sehwag falling lbw to Jeetan Patel for 22.

All-rounder Jesse Ryder had another good day for New Zealand, following up his double century with the wicket of Dravid, who edged to the keeper after making 83, and two catches.

"To look at him, you wouldn't think he could do half the things he does," said Martin.

"He feeds off having that golden touch. When he has the ball something can happen and again today he lulled a guy who was batting nicely into a bad shot. That sums the guy up."

Dravid shared stands of 87 with Sachin Tendulkar (49) and 81 with VVS Laxman (76) as India sought to extract themselves from the crisis of being reduced to 79-3 at the end of the second day.

But once he had gone, the lower order was swept away by Martin and Iain O'Brien (2-66), with the last five wickets going down for just 59 runs.

Laxman, who hit 14 fours in his three and a quarter hour innings, was eighth to go, edging a ball from Martin to Tim McIntosh at second slip.

The same combination had earlier accounted for Yuvraj Singh, Martin's 150th Test victim, for a duck and he also removed Dinesh Karthik for eight with the help of Ryder's catch at third slip.

Harbhajan Singh struck a six and two fours in his 18 off 11 balls but he and Zaheer Khan well to successive balls from O'Brien as the innings came to a swift end.

O'Brien was on a hat-trick when he was given the new ball in India's second innings but he was foiled by Sehwag who despatched it past mid-on for four.

The opener later missed an attempted sweep off Patel, however, left the umpire with an easy decision, but Gautam Gambhir (14) and Dravid (11) prevented further damage before the close.

Afterwards, Laxman insisted that despite still trailing by 267 runs, India felt positive about the position they were in.

"We have done some amazing things in the past and we take a lot of confidence from that," he said.

"We are all looking forward to the next two days and I'm quite confident that we'll do something special."
