Born in Kingaroy, Queensland, Matthew Lawrence Hayden makes his one-day debut for Australia in England in 1993 Picked for the 1994 tour of South Africa, Hayden (right) makes only 15 and five on his debut - his second Test does not come until December 1996 Left out of the 1997 tour of England, he spends the summer playing for Hampshire - and makes 1,446 first-class runs for them He spends nearly three years in the Test wilderness - playing for Northamptonshire in 1999 and 2000 before being recalled by Australia His comeback series is in the West Indies in 2000/01, where he takes a superb catch to dismiss Sherwin Campbell He soon forges a prolific opening partnership with Justin Langer as Australia begin to dominate Test cricket Hayden scores 549 runs in three Tests during the 2001 tour to India - but Australia suffer a rare series defeat Hayden does not play a one-day international between 1994 and 2000, but is in the side which beats India in the 2003 World Cup final Hayden puts his name in the record books by making 380 against Zimbabwe in 2003 - at the time the highest score in Test history Hayden becomes a target for England's new brand of aggressive cricket in the one-day series that precedes the 2005 Ashes He averages just 35.33 in the five-Test Ashes series that follows, with England at the top of their game He has to wait until the final Test for his first century of the series - but England claim the draw they need to win the series 2-1 The tables are turned in 2006/07 - Australia beat England in three days at Melbourne on the way to a 5-0 Ashes whitewash Hayden lights up the 2007 World Cup with a stunning 101 off 68 balls against South Africa in St Kitts And a second World Cup winner's medal follows, as the Aussies cruise to victory over Sri Lanka in the final By his own high standards, he struggles for form on the autumn tour of India in 2008, contributing just 234 runs in eight innings Hayden is all smiles with his family at Christmas, but is dropped from the one-day side after they lose the Test series to South Africa On New Year's Day 2009, Hayden joins former team-mate Glenn McGrath in promoting the latter's cancer foundation Australia skipper Ricky Ponting is by his side as an emotional Hayden announces his retirement
