New Zealand crawled to 145-2 after bowling West Indies out for 307 on day two of the second Test at Napier. The Windies resumed on 258-6 with Shivnarine Chanderpaul on 100 - and the left-hander made 126 not out before he finally ran out of batting partners. Seamer Iain O'Brien ran through the Windies tail to claim a Test-best 6-75. In reply, the Kiwis scored at barely two runs an over - with Tim McIntosh taking 210 balls to score 62 not out - before bad light ended play. Play had begun with Chanderpaul hoping to coax more runs out of the tail, but wickets soon tumbled at McLean Park. O'Brien had taken just 2-59 from his first 18 overs on Friday, but grabbed 4-16 in the morning session - with Jerome Taylor, Sulieman Benn and Daren Powell all caught behind by keeper Brendon McCullum, who picked up five catches in the innings.  | 606: DEBATE |
When O'Brien trapped last man Fidel Edwards lbw with a slow yorker just before lunch, Chanderpaul was left stranded on 126 from 282 balls. "It's as consistent as I've ever been, pace-wise as well. It was nice to be able to hit areas I wanted to," said O'Brien. New Zealand suffered an early setback in reply when opener Jamie How caught by Sewnarine Chattergoon off Edwards for 12 in the fourth over. That was the cue for McIntosh and Daniel Flynn to carefully - and slowly - compile a second-wicket stand of 118. McIntosh, playing only his second Test, gave one chance when he skied an attempted pull, but both Edwards and keeper Dinesh Ramdin stopped short, expecting the other to take the catch. A combination of rain and bad light had looked set to end play with the Black Caps on 119-1. But the players eventually returned in time for McIntosh to complete a 181-ball maiden Test fifty with a off-drive for four. Edwards (2-26) then removed Flynn with a smart return catch for 57 - scored off 161 balls. Ross Taylor helped McIntosh through to the close when the light faded again with the home side still trailing by 162. Despite his side's slow scoring rate, New Zealand coach Andy Moles was happy with the foundation laid for their innings by McIntosh and Flynn. "These two have set a base that our middle and lower order should be able to launch from," he said.
