Second Test, Centurion Park: South Africa 20-1 v Bangladesh 250 all out (day one, close)
South African paceman Ntini (left) took 4-32 before he left the field with cramp |
South Africa bowled out Bangladesh for 250 as they looked to seal a series win in the second Test at Centurion Park. Morne Morkel and Makahya Ntini each took four wickets with Ntini returning a miserly 4-32. Junaid Siddique and Mushfiqur Rahim hit half centuries before South Africa's all-pace attack ended Bangladesh's spirited resistance. South Africa were 20 for one at the close, with Neil McKenzie dismissed for a duck in the third over. After a woeful batting performance in the first Test, Bangladesh made a solid start as openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes spent an hour putting on a patient 25. When Kayes (6) was caught off Makhaya Ntini, Siddique came to the crease and soon set about resisting the home side. But after a frustrating first spell, Morkel made a double breakthrough, dismissing Iqbal (31) and Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful for a single in successive overs to reduce the visitors to 64-3 at lunch. | MY SPORT: DEBATE |
Siddique reached his third Test half-century off 85 balls after lunch but his brilliant defence came to an end when he was caught off by McKenize off Ntini for 67. Rahim, batting at number eight, had only 16 when he was joined by last man Mahbubul Alam. A final flurry saw Rahim go for his shots in a last-wicket stand of 56 - in which Alam scored only one run - before AB de Villiers caught the diminutive wicket-keeper for 65. Ntini was the pick of South Africa's formidable bowlers, taking 4-32 before he left the field with cramp while Morkel finished with figures of 4-73. South Africa made a poor start when McKenzie lifted Mashrafe Mortaza's delivery to Raqibul Hasan in the gully. Captain Graeme Smith, who needs just 18 runs to become the leading runs scorer in Test cricket this season, was at the crease on 15.
