New Zealand clinched a 1-0 series win in Bangladesh after the rain-affected second Test ended in a draw.

Just two days of the five-day Test saw play, with the captains calling an end to proceedings with New Zealand on 79-1 in their second innings in Mirpur.

Earlier, Bangladesh fought hard to avoid the follow-on and declared on 169-9 in reply to the visitors' 262-6.

Struggling on 44-6, they were guided to safety thanks to a stand of 78 from Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza.

That seventh-wicket stand helped the hosts avoid batting for a second time and deny New Zealand an unlikely victory that, at one stage, had looked on the cards.

Bangladesh resumed on 13-3 and, with the game reduced to a two-day Test, they needed at least 163 runs to avoid the follow-on.

A brilliant spell of bowling from Daniel Vettori (66-5), Jeetan Patel and Iain O'Brien saw wickets tumble and leave Bangladesh languishing on 44-6 and give New Zealand hope of victory.

However, Shakib (49) and Mortaza (48) took Bangladesh past their lowest ever Test score of 67 and continued to edge Bangladesh towards their target until Vettori ended Shakib's resistance by trapping him leg-before.

Mortaza soon followed, before Abdur Razzak (16 not out) avoided the follow-on.

With not much to play for New Zealand comfortably reached 79-1, Jesse Ryder following his 91 in the first innings with an unbeaten 39, with both captains deciding to call a draw.
