Marsh closely resembles his father Geoff, who also played for Australia |
Opening batsman Shaun Marsh will replace the injured Phil Jaques in Australia's Test squad touring India. Marsh, 25, a recent addition to the one-day team, will fly to India after Jaques had to return home to seek specialist advice for a back problem. Australia's chief selector Andrew Hilditch said: "Shaun has opened for Australia in the one-day international arena and shown great potential. "We are confident that Shaun could fill any role in the batting order." Hilditch said the left-hander, son of Geoff Marsh who opened in 50 Tests from 1985, was "capable of having a significant impact in Australian cricket in the future". Marsh Jr said: "I gave dad a quick call. He's pretty happy. "Getting in the one-day team was a huge privilege but to be part of the Test team now... just being over there and being a part of it is an amazing feeling and I'm really looking forward to that. If I get an opportunity, that would be fantastic." | 606: DEBATE |
He came to international prominence in the inaugural Indian Premier League last April, where he was the competition's leading runscorer with 616 runs at an average of 68.44. Marsh averages 35.82 in domestic first-class cricket and 47.57 in the eight one-day internationals he has played. Australia have not had a father and son playing Test cricket since Ned Gregory, who played a Test in 1877, and his son Syd, an ex-captain who led the Aussies in 58 Tests from 1890. India take a 1-0 lead into the third Test of the series - on 29 October in Delhi. Calls to send out the wayward but experienced all-rounder Andrew Symonds - who has not played for Australia since being suspended for skipping a team meeting in August - have been ignored by the selectors.
