Stanford deal 'has been brokered'

A compromise has been reached in the dispute over England's $20m Stanford Twenty20 game, BBC Sport understands.

The game was thrown into doubt when the West Indies Cricket Board lost its case against team sponsor Digicel and was told it could not sanction the match.

However, BBC 5 Live's Pat Murphy said: "Peace has broken out between Digicel and Sir Allen Stanford.

"A deal between Digicel's owner Denis O'Brien and Stanford involves Stanford making concessions over branding."

Murphy said a High Court arbitration hearing in London which found in Digicel's favour had forced the Texan millionaire, who is bankrolling the "Super Series", to back down.

"I understand a telephone conference on Wednesday night between Stanford and O'Brien resolved the dispute, and I'm sure Digicel has won one or two major concessions."

Stanford had argued the team playing England was not a representative side of the West Indies Cricket Board and thus Digicel, as the WICB's principal sponsors, did not have any rights.

He was only prepared to grant them minimal branding on the bowlers' run-ups and boundary boards.

Digicel felt it had a right to a larger slice of the publicity and marketing surrounding the $20m (11.5m) winner-takes-all match on 1 November in the Caribbean.

Stanford remained confident that a compromise could be brokered, and the Professional Cricketers' Association and England Cricket Board (ECB) managing director Hugh Morris assured England's players the match was not in jeopardy.

Domestic Twenty20 champions Middlesex are also involved in the action - and are due to be paid handsomely should they win their match against Trinidad & Tobago.

The ECB is keen that the match goes ahead as planned, as it feels it is the best way to lure the top players away from the temptations of the Indian Premier League.
