The clubs pavilion was badly damaged by fire |
Liverpool Cricket Club is ready to host Lancashire's Pro40 match with Somerset next Sunday as the repair work in their historic pavilion is complete. Fire destroyed part of the ground at Aigburth two months ago and it was a race against time to complete the work. "All the work has been done and it was finished last week," chairman Peter McAvoy told BBC Radio Merseyside. "The contractors and insurance company were very co-operative and they got in and started work straight away." While the blaze was being put out, McAvoy was in Scotland playing golf when he received a phone call to find out what had happened. | When you see the change now - it's wonderful Liverpool Cricket Club chairman Peter McAvoy |
It is believed the fire in July was started deliberately but it was so important for the club that everything possible was done to host fixtures with Somerset and Kent in September. "We were extremely concerned about Lancashire and what they would think about it," McAvoy continued. "They were immediately contacted and assured everything would be alright with our fingers crossed. "When you see the change now it's wonderful. But at first [when hearing the news] your heart sinks."
