Woodhouse Grange have won two of their three Lord's finals |
York Senior League side Woodhouse Grange clinched their fourth trip to Lord's in 13 years in the National Village Cricket Cup at Woodhouses. Grange posted 194-6 in their 35 overs and in reply Woodhouses fell behind the run rate and were dismissed for 107. Grange skipper Steve Burdett told BBC Radio York: "To achieve a Lord's final once is superb but for a club to be there four times is something special." Grange will play Valley End from Surrey in the final on Monday, 8 September. Heavy overnight rain left the outfield in a soggy state and delayed the start until 1515 BST, with the game reduced to 35 overs per side. | It shows depth within the club [right down to] the tea ladies Woodhouse Grange skipper Steve Burdett |
Burdett admitted he was lucky to lose the toss because "I would've bowled first because the wicket was a little bit sticky early on," but Woodhouses won it, chose to bowl and Grange openers Jonathon Bean and Nick Hadfield put on 121 for the first wicket. "Once they took the shine off the new ball they put away all the bad balls that were bowled to them... that was the big difference between the two sides," Burdett added. Woodhouses lost an early wicket and the run rate was 10-an-over with 13 overs to go. As they lashed out desperately, David Suddeby and Tom Quinn shared seven wickets between them for hardly any runs. Burdett said: "David took three for not many in the semi-final last year," but missed the final when the Grange skipper became available again. "Both David and Tom finished the game off exceptionally well." As for going to Lord's yet again, Burdett admitted it was "a bit surreal," partly because they had denied Woodhouses the thrill in their centenary year. "Not only does it show how strong we are as a club but how strong we are as a team, it shows depth within the club [right down to] the tea ladies." The club plan to appoint a fourth different scorer for the Lord's final, so that a different club volunteer can enjoy the thrill and receive a medal.
