Harbhajan Singh spun India to victory with a day to spare in Galle, to level the Test series with Sri Lanka at 1-1.

The visitors resumed on 200-4, and were bowled out for 269 as spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis took seven wickets between them.

Chasing 307 to win, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 136 as only two men - Thilan Samaraweera (67 not out) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (38) - passed 10.

Off-spinner Harbhajan took 4-51 to finish with match figures of 10-153.

Seamer Ishant Sharma also took 3-20 with the new ball, eventually having Dilshan caught behind by keeper Dinesh Karthik after adding 76 with Samaraweera for the fifth wicket - the only significant partnership of the innings.

Indeed, the pair between them contributed 77% of Sri Lanka's second-innings runs.

Having lost Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid in quick succession on Saturday evening, India's second innings was wrapped up efficiently in the morning session, although Sourav Ganguly took 76 minutes to score 16 before being stumped off Muralitharan, who took 3-107.

At the other end, Mendis claimed 4-92 to give him match figures of 10-209 - and 18 wickets in his first two Tests.

Sri Lanka's run chase began disastrously with Malinda Warnapura, Kumar Sangakkara and captain Mahela Jayawardene all falling cheaply to slip catches to leave the home side 10-3.

Michael Vandort (10) - the only other player to make double figures - had been dropped at third slip by Dravid off the second ball of the innings but fell lbw after lunch to give Harbhajan his first wicket of the innings.

However, Vandort was the only man to fall in the afternoon session as Samaraweera and Dilshan guided their side to 109-4 by tea.

Samaraweera batted 217 minutes for his unbeaten 67 before running out of partners, but Dilshan departed soon after tea, when he edged a brute of a ball from Sharma through to Karthik.

Wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene hung around for just over half-an-hour, the last four wickets fell for just five runs as Harbhajan and skipper Anil Kumble cleaned up the tail.

I am really proud of the way we played in this match

India captain Anil Kumble
It represents an encouraging fightback for Kumble's side after their innings defeat at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo in the first Test.

"I am really proud of the way we played in this match," Kumble said.

"The first Test was one of those games where nothing went right for us, but the way we have come back is really amazing. For a 19-year-old to crank it up like (Sharma) did was something special."

His opposite number Jayawardene added: "I thought 307 was a good score to chase on a fourth-day pitch, but it's important you get a good start in any run chase.

"The bowling unit fought really well throughout the game, but we failed to capitalise on our first innings where we needed to put India under pressure."

The third and final Test begins on Friday, 8 August, with the teams returning to Colombo - this time to the Premadasa Stadium.
