Berkshire were in a strong position on the opening day of their Minor Counties match against Herefordshire thanks to a fourth-wicket partnership of 251. Jono McLean made 122 and Steve Naylor 121 as Berkshire declared on 406-9 after having earlier won the toss. No other batsmen passed 50 for Berkshire - the next highest scorer was opener Mitchell Stokes with 48. In reply, Herefordshire closed day one of the match on 55-1, with David Griffiths taking the only wicket.
Berkshire coach Tim Dellor: "It's a typical good batting wicket at Finchampstead. Having won the toss it was important that we made some runs and thanks to Jono and Steve, we're looking good. "It's now up to the bowlers to take the 19 wickets we need in the next two days, but it's not going to be easy and we're going to have to work hard." Herefordshire captain Chris Buroughs:: "It was a tricky period of 17 overs, but we managed to get through with losing only one wicket."
