New Zealand terminate Bond's deal
Shane Bond
Bond is now out of New Zealand's series against England
Shane Bond has had his contract with New Zealand Cricket terminated because of his commitment to compete in the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL).

The fast bowler signed a three-year deal with the ICL believing it would not harm his international career.

But under International Cricket Council rules, contracted players are not allowed to appear in an unsanctioned event without its consent.

"I've taken immense pride in playing for the Black Caps," said Bond, 32.

"I believed I could continue to do so for the term of my contract while also taking up the ICL opportunity."

The injury-prone Bond attempted to come to an agreement with NZL that would have allowed him to fulfil his contractual obligations until May while also playing in the ICL, which has announced a number of new tournaments to be played in 2008.

"Given what has happened, I want to do the right thing by New Zealand Cricket, so at their request I have terminated my contract," said Bond.

This is a difficult situation and we must comply with ICC regulations

NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan

"I will continue to be available to play for the Black Caps and look forward to doing so once again when New Zealand Cricket deems this appropriate."

Bond, who has taken 79 wickets in 17 Tests and 125 wickets in 67 one-day internationals, will now miss the forthcoming home series against England.

He would have provided the main threat to Peter Moores' side in both formats of the game had he been available for the two Twenty20 internationals, five one-day internationals and three Tests.

Bond's contract with the ICL is reported to be worth more than 400,000 and he joined fellow New Zealand internationals Chris Cairns, Nathan Astle, Chris Harris, Craig McMillan, Hamish Marshall and Daryl Tuffey in signing up for the league.

Justin Vaughan, the chief executive of NZC, said: "This is a difficult situation and we must comply with ICC regulations and support other member countries and as a consequence can no longer entertain Shane playing for the Black Caps.

"At some stage in the future we may be able to welcome Shane back into the Black Caps, either when he is no longer playing for the ICL or when that competition does not exist."
