SRI LANKA WIN BY 64 RUNS

2005: Guys, for those of you still here and still caring, thanks again for keeping me going during another hectic day of World Twenty20. I'm done for these live updates - I can leave you now in the very capable hands of my colleagues for the rest of the tournament. It's been emotional - I'll never forget it. Meantime, keep those crazy missives coming. And if you see Sammy tonight, give him a massive birthday hug. He deserves it. Love Stevo.

"Not sure of the state of the wicket in tonight's game but Pakistan are the favourites in my book now - Sri Lanka were not so hot tonight."
CoolWolf74 on 606

SRI LANKA WIN BY 64 RUNS

Wicket falls
16th over Ban 83 all out WICKET Razzak c Sangakkara b Jayasuriya 0: Razzak attempts to slog Jaya out of the ground and gets a snick behind to Sangakkara, who puts Bangladesh out of their misery.

Wicket falls
16th over Ban 80-9 WICKET Mahmadullah c Mubarak b Jayasuriya 16: Mahmo tries a reverse sweep off the veteran and he can only top-edge it, Mubarak running around from backward point to take the catch.

15th over Ban 80-8: Mahmudullah slaps Dilshan into the stands for six, and with four singles, it's a very handy over for the Bangladeshis.

14th over Ban 70-8: After his figures of 0-64 against Pakistan, Jayasuriya comes on for a bowl. You don't need me to tell you he's unlikely to be as expensive tonight. Two singles from the over and this game is drifting towards a pretty tame conclusion. Which must be why I've had about two emails in the last half hour. Gutted.

Wicket falls
13th over Ban 68-8 WICKET Rahim run out (Sangakkara) 0: Brilliant work from the Sri Lankans, Bangladesh going for a quick two and the young wicket-keeper, running to the non-striker's end, fabulously ran out by Sangakkara, with his keeper's gloves on. Stunning.

Wicket falls
13th over Ban 66-7 WICKET Mortaza b Malinga 12: Mortaza slashes wildly outside off stump and gets a four, snicked down to third man. But he keeps backing away and eventually he backs so far he shows Malinga all three stumps. He only needs one, and sure enough off stump is uprooted.

"Just came across this on 'Bopara's Twenty20 Batting Guide': "There is a buzz about Twenty20 and the key is not to get caught up in it." What do you make of it, Stevo?"
Mann, Birmingham, via TMS

It's too late for me, Manners. I've been buzzing since it started last Tuesday and I'll be buzzing until it stops. Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz............

12th over Ban 62-6: Mashrafe Mortaza can bat, and he scores a very welcome boundary off Maharoof, carting him through the offside. Three ugly swing-and-misses later and he's pretty lucky to still be at the crease.

11th over Ban 55-6: Malinga the slinger is on as Sri Lanka seek to wrap things up quick sharp. A bouncer to finish, a couple from the over and the Tigers are massively up the creek here.

"Looks like tonight's street party in Dhaka is off, guys!"
FleetJackHobbs, on 606

Wicket falls
10th over Ban 53-6 WICKET Shakib b Maharoof 18: Maharoof is changing his pace all over the place as he almost creeps up to the wicket. Shakib gets a couple off his legs but he perishes soon after, this time a deflection off his pads ricocheting onto his stumps. Furniture everywhere and Bangladesh are in as big a mess as Shakib's stumps.

"I'm beginning to wonder what sort of track they are playing on."
Audiernesghost on 606

9th over Ban 48-5: Shakib chips over cover for a lovely boundary and Bangladesh need plenty more of them if they are going to get anywhere near this Sri Lankan total.

Wicket falls
9th over Ban 40-5 WICKET Chowdhury run out (Malinga) 5: Big, big trouble for the Tigers now as they lose Nadif Chowdhury for just five. Great arm from Malinga, accurate throw and Dilshan, who's just come on, whips off the bails.

8th over Ban 39-4: Fervez Maharoof is in into the Sri Lankan attack and he's already using his devilish slower ball to bamboozle the batsmen. Four singles from the over and Bangladesh are in some trouble here.

7th over Ban 35-4: Vaas concedes three off his final over to finish with 2-14 from his four, a super effort from the veteran. It should set his side up for victory in Johannesburg.

Wicket falls
7th over Ban 31-4 WICKET Ashraful c Dilshan b Vaas 4: Vaas bowls his fourth over of the innings and he's done it again, Ashraful - the one wicket Bangladesh could not afford to lose - has gone. Trying to smash Vaas out of the ground, he gets plenty of height but no distance and is easily caught by Dilshan.

6th over Ban 31-3: Fernando beats Shakib with a belter that just moves away outside off stump. Shakib replies with a lofted drive over cover for four, a touch tentative perhaps. Shakib sneaks a cheeky single when Fernando can't be bothered to pick the ball up off his own bowling.

5th over Ban 25-3: Mohammad Ashraful and Shakib al Hasan are in now and the skipper has a big task on his hands. Ashraful gets a couple off his legs just in front of square but it's another fine over from Vaas.

Wicket falls
4th over Ban 21-3 WICKET Aftab b Fernando 18: Not what was required from Aftab Ahmed, moving across his crease and trying to hit Fernando into oblivion. He misses a straight one and is cleaned all ends up. Poor, poor batting. Double-wicket maiden for Fernando.

Wicket falls
4th over Ban 21-2 WICKET Tamim c Malinga b Fernando 3: The left-handed opener is gone, lofting one into the deep behind square on the offside and being neatly caught by a crouching Lasith.

"Just as long as Bangladesh havent been reading the English text book on Twenty20 cricket they should be alright."
Nathan, Oxford, via text

3rd over Ban 21-1: A little bit more restrained this over from Bangladesh, the wily Vaas using all of his experience to concede just two off the over. Aftab looks to score off the last ball - but a lovely inswinger from Vaas is too good.

2nd over Ban 19-1: Aftab doesn't even give Fernando the respect of a look - he picks the first ball up and slogs it over mid-wicket for four. The second ball goes a bit squarer, but same result. After two singles, Aftab drills a sensational drive through the covers all along the floor for four. 15 off the over, remarkable.

1st over Ban 4-1: Aftab Ahmed launches Vaas high into the Johannesburg night sky and it falls just short on the long-on boundary, plugging in the outfield. He picks up three - good start for Sri Lanka and it's Dilhara Fernando next.

Our for a duck
1st over Ban 1-1 WICKET Nazimuddin LBW b Vaas 0: Tamim is full of intent, but Vaas is bang on the money, full and straight for the first three balls. A single onto the leg side gets him off the mark, but Vaas gets one to nip back at Nazo and he's plumb in front.

1839 BST: The players are out, Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Nazimuddin will open the batting and it's Chaminda Vaas first up.

Bangladesh require 148 to win

"What was better - Reading losing to Sunderland or Pakistan beating Australia?"
Hashim, Glasgow, via TMS

Well, as I'm not a Reading fan (or Sunderland) and I'm English, what do you reckon, Hashers?!

"I can't believe how poor Sri Lanka are playing. I didn't expect an upset today but it looks like Banglas are heading for a win."
gerrard-is-class on 606

20th over Sri 147-5: Last over and Razzak arrows his left-arm spinners full and straight, just what is required. Nothing remotely boundary-hittable, until the last ball which Dilshan rocks back and carves past point for four. Still, not a great effort from Sri Lanka - could be interesting this one.

19th over Sri 139-5: Sid lopes back into the attack and Mubarak launches him over his head for a one-bounce four. Next ball, he gets six over extra-cover as Aftab Ahmed just fails to hang on to what would have been a stunning catch. Three twos too, and the Sri Lankans have ramped it up a notch.

18th over Sri 122-5: Finally a boundary to celebrate for Sri Lanka, Jehan Mubarak slashing Morto over gully for four and then launching him back over his head for a couple more. Dilshan then gets down on one knee and lifts Morto over short-fine leg. 13 off the over, much more like it.

"How much do they pay you for this job? Is there anything else that you do there?"
Ravi, via TMS

A) Have you heard of the minimum wage? and B) Yeah. I'm a football journo by trade, you might have seen my name on the odd match report/news story over the past few years. Sunderland 2-1 Reading on Saturday - cracking game.

Hi Stevo. Could you let my wife know I'll be on the later train home? At least I'll get to see all of the commentary before I head off. Work, bah!"
Mark, Manchester, via TMS

17th over Sri 109-5: This has to be the most boundary-free Sri Lankan innings I've ever seen. Razzak drifts his left-arm spinners into the batters' pads and there are just six off the over. The dancers haven't had to get up for runs for a good while.

"Looks like Sri Lanka are on for 160 if they're luck. What tin-pot cricketing nation could fail to beat that?"
Gary in Paris, via TMS

16th over Sri 103-5: Shakib is difficult to get away and it's an over of five singles and a one, you'd have to say you'd take that at any stage of a Twenty20 game, let alone so near the end of the innings.

Wicket falls
15th over Sri 96-5 WICKET Jayawardene b Razzak 30: Abdur Razzak is on and Tillekeratne Dilshan would have been out by a mile had an accurate throw followed a crazy call for a single from Mahela. Razzak bowls a wide before getting one straighter and Mahela drags it on to his stumps. He might have made 30, but my goodness me is he bang out of form.

"Welcome back Stevo, the others just weren't up to your standard, I bet Engalnd would have won today if you had been on the game."
Louise, Manchester, via TMS

Fine, have a go at me. Arrogant, yeah? Well this is the only email I've had in the last 15 minutes. You gave me no option.

14th over Sri 90-4: Mahela isn't timing anything - first he lifts Mahmudullah over mid-off for two, then he gets another two just short of long-off. Next ball and he's dropped at cover by Shakib - I say dropped, but the flying Bangladeshi almost pulled off a stunning flying catch. The banter's dried up. Should I take it personally?

Wicket falls
13th over Sri 84-4 WICKET Silva LBW b Shakib 12: Mahela picks another another couple into the offside and then finally strikes the ball to the ropes with an unseemly cart through cover. Shakib has what appears to be a plumb LBW turned down, but next ball he gets it in the same place and is given the decision.

12th over Sri 77-3: Mahmudullah carries on his tweaking way and Chamara plunders him down the ground for a couple. The arm ball beats him all ends up with the last ball and it's another successful over for Bangladesh.

"I think a score above 180 is too difficult for Bangladesh to chase. If they can wrap up SL for about 160, then this match will get very interesting."
SpeakingCivilised on 606

11th over Sri 71-3: Shakib Al Hasan is now into the attack and Chamara blasts him into the stand at mid-wicket for a gigantic six. 10 off the over, better - but they'll need to up that rate much more.

10th over Sri 61-3: Just four runs from the over and a wicket too, and Bangladesh are tightening the noose in Johannesburg. Chamara Silva joins his captain.

Wicket falls
10th over Sri 59-3 WICKET Sangakkara b Mahmudullah 20: The youngster gets his man, lofting the ball up there and causing Kumar to miss it as he is cleaned up, the top of off stump being knocked over. If he hadn't been bowled he'd have been stumped. Maybe.

9th over Sri 57-2: Kumar is timing the ball nicely, but there's a stark lack of boundaries in this Sri Lankan innings. Eight off the over in ones and twos and Ashraful is doing his job for the Tigers.

8th over Sri 49-2: Rahim drops another clanger off Mohammad Mahmudullah this time, missing an edge off Mahela - after it had lodged in his pad! The Sri Lankans are struggling a bit here - just three from the over and the captain is badly out of touch.

"Andy - I like your definition of middle class! Here potatoes are a luxury!"
Noel in a windowless (and thereby naturally ventilated office) freezing cold office in Siberia, via TMS

7th over Sri 46-2: Ashraful brings himself on and Mahela clips a couple off his pads wide of long-on. The Sri Lankan skipper then just avoids a run out - only because Rahim dropped the ball trying to break the stumps after a fine throw from Aftab Ahmed.

"I've just moved to Preston for uni and I'm sitting reading a cricket commentry and listening to TMS while playing with a balloon. Do I have problems?"
KP, no longer in Newcastle

6th over Sri 39-2: Cracking over from Sid, taking a key wicket and conceding just two in the process. He beats Mahela Jayawardena all ends up with an outswinger to finish.

Wicket falls
6th over Sri 37-2 WICKET Tharanga c Rahim b Rasel 23: Sir Lanka lose their second wicket in strange circumstances, Tharanga getting a tiny bottom edge and Rahim taking the catch inbetween his pads behind the stumps.

5th over Sri 37-1: Tharanga hoiks one through mid-wicket for four and picks up three more wide of mid-on, before Sangakkara clatters a short-ish one into the covers for yet another boundary.

"I love the opportunities the beeb are giving to you middle-class text-commentary lot - Dirs and Fordyce in a campervan and you having potatoes for dinner. I can't imagine anything less rock-n-roll."
Andy Turner, in a souless, windowless cube, somewhere in corporate America, via TMS

I won't be having potatoes, sadly, Andy. If I was going back to my mum's, 120 miles away, they'd be cold by then. And that would just be a massive disappointment for everyone.

4th over Sri 26-1: Tharanga is beaten by a Sid beauty, but he recovers his composure to lash a corking square-cut past point for four. He does the same thing two balls later, but it's cut off by a man on the fence.

"Listen, I'm happily married and I've got an important game of golf tomorrow. Should I go to a lap-dancing club tonight 'just for one beer' or do you think it might impair my performance tomorrow?"
John in Manchester, via TMS

Largely depends what performance you're talking about Johnners, my old son.

3rd over Sri 19-1: Morta is bang on the money here, Kumar Sangakkara leaving it until the last ball of the over to launch him over mid-wicket for a glorious boundary.

"Will the BBC be commisioning a 'Solanki's guide to Twenty20 wicketkeeping' in line with using players from countries who can't play the game?"
Tom, via TMS

Bet you'd read it if we did, Tommo.

2nd over Sri 12-1: Syed Rasel is the other opener and Mushfiqur Rahim, standing up, concedes four byes as one goes straight through his legs. That apart, cracking stuff from Sid.

"I think a number of records will be broken in this match. Sri Lanka make 300 for four and Bangladesh make 300 all out - a tie. Ashraful makes the first ever double-hundred and Malinga takes first ever 10-wicket haul. Game goes to a bowl-out, where Bangladesh win 23-22."
Arif, via TMS

1st over Sri 8-1: Tharanga clips another couple off his pads but it's a fine first over from Morta, who is getting the ball to swing in the evening damp.

Our for a duck
1st over Sri 5-1 WICKET Jayasuriya c Mahmudullah b Mortaza 0: Upul Tharanga glances the first ball of the innings from Mashrafe Mortaza for four and after a single, the Tigers claim the prized scalp of Sanath Jayasuriya, playing an extraordinary shot high into the offside off his first ball and being caught on the cover-point boundary.

"Stevo, why is it Stevo and not Jono?"
Chris in Maidenhead, via TMS

Seriously? Is that what you call banter? People, I need more from you. Enough with questions for the insane.

1657: The teams are out and we are ready to rock again.

Teams in full:
Bangladesh: Mohammad Ashraful, Aftab Ahmed, Nadif Chowdhury, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mushfiqur Rahim, Syed Rasel, Abdur Razzak, Mohammad Mahmudullah, Mohammad Nazimuddin.
Sri Lanka: Mahela Jayawardena, Dilhara Fernando, Sanath Jayasuriya, Farveez Maharoof, Lasith Malinga, Jehan Mubarak, Kumar Sangakkara, Chamara Silva, Upul Tharanga, Tillekeratne Dilshan, Chaminda Vaas.

"Oh happy, happy day!!! Congrats to Pakistan! If only England played with that sort of spirit."
Wigs666 on 606

"Stevo, what is the protocol? Do you still consider emails relating to earlier in the day or not?"
Peter in Preston, via TMS

Pete, as I carefully explained during the opening World Twenty20 game last week - the rules are, there are no rules. I'm making it up as I go along, so I can hardly tell you lot not to.

Team news: Bangladesh make two changes, with Mahmud Ullah and Nadif Chowdhury stepping up, while Sri Lanka drop Gayan Wijekoon in favour of Farveez Maharoof.

1644: The toss: Mohammad Ashraful wins it and Bangladesh will bowl first.

1642: Ways to get in touch with Stevo: Text 81111. Email tms@bbc.co.uk. Interact with your fellow cricket-lovers on the 606 link above. Come on, let's be havin' you.

1636: But enough of me. Are you insatiable lot ready for your third helping of the day? I tells you, you've never known anything like this. This time, it's Sri Lanka against Bangladesh from Johannesburg. Both teams lost their opening Super Eights game, so it's getting towards squeaky-bum time.

1631 BST: Let me fill you in on the last 17 minutes of my life. I went to the loo, I took a few brief walk around outside, where I caught a glimpse of Britain's favourite disc jockey and 2002 winner of I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! Tony Blackburn and I then spoke briefly to my mum. I asked her what she was doing. "Digging up potatoes from the garden for our dinner," she answered. "What you doing?". "Live updates from the Twenty20 World Cup, mum." "That's nice, dear."

You've got to love suburban life, haven't you?
