India plans Twenty20 competition
Brian Lara

India's board of control (BCCI) is planning its own Twenty20 competition to counter the Indian Cricket League.

"The idea was floated last year," board secretary Niranjan Shah said. "It will be discussed next month and we could have foreign players participating."

The BCCI's league is seen as an attempt to rival the ICL though no details have been revealed as to its composition.

The rebel ICL, starting in October, has signed several foreign stars including Brian Lara and Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Others to join include Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq and Imran Farhat, despite the boards of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka announcing bans on any player who associates with the ICL.

The Indian board sacked former captain Kapil Dev from his post of national academy chief on Tuesday because of his position on the board of the rebel league.

India media speculation has suggested the Indian board's league could comprise franchise teams owned by corporations where players are bought, sold and transferred as in football.
