The rain-interrupted first Test between Bangladesh and India in Chittagong ended in a draw despite a late attempt by the tourists to force a win.

Play started four hours late on the final day because of a damp pitch, and India declared on 100-6, setting Bangladesh 250 to win in 43 overs.

But the captains agreed to a draw 40 minutes early with the hosts on 104-2.

Bangladesh's Mashrafe Mortaza was man of the match after taking 4-97 and a maiden Test 50 in the first innings.

India resumed on Tuesday morning on 44-2, 193 ahead, but soon lost Sachin Tendulkar for 31, bowled by the slow left-armer Mohammad Rafique as he attempted a wild slog sweep.

A couple of big thumps from Mahendra Dhoni pushed the scoreboard along, while three other Indian batsmen went down blazing.

Rafique finished with the flattering figures of 3-27.

It was not clear if Bangladesh's batsmen ever had instructions to attempt the chase.

But after losing one of their best hitters, Shahriar Nafees, in the fourth over, they were never on course.

Old pro Javed Omar helped himself to an unbeaten fifty, while skipper Habibul Bashar was the only other man to lose his wicket, caught in the deep off Ramesh Powar.

Mortaza, who took 4-97 in India's first innings, added a vital 79 to help Bangladesh avoid the follow-on on Monday.

He said: "It was the first Test I got man of the match and it was a very good performance for me, bowling and batting.

"This wicket is not very easy to bowl on, a very flat wicket, but I enjoyed the batting."

He said the wicket for the second and final Test, in Mirpur, would be "similar".
