Ireland fans have brought colour to the World Cup |
The Ireland team has thanked its fans for the fantastic backing which they believe has helped them qualify for the Super 8s at the World Cup. Up to 2000 Irish supporters, known as the 'Blarney Army', also won the hearts of locals in Jamaica.
"The noise they made was definitely a factor in our qualification," said Ireland captain Trent Johnston.
"I think it's fair to say we won over the Jamaican public and they backed us all the way."
Ireland created one of the biggest upsets in cricket history when they defeated Pakistan at Sabina Park in the group stage.
The three-wicket triumph, which followed a tie with Zimbabwe, secured progression to the Super 8s on the team's first appearance in the World Cup.
""We'd like to publicly thank the Irish fans who have brought such a vocal and colourful support - they were nothing short of incredible in our games in Jamaica," added Johnston.
"We recognise the tremendous sacrifice many have made to support the team, and thank them from the bottom of our hearts.
"It was a great boost to have so many present, not just from Ireland, but also from America, South Africa and Australia."
Ireland have now moved on to Guyana, where they will play England in their opening Super 8 game on Friday.
