Pakistan put Windies on back foot
First Test, Lahore, day one (stumps): West Indies 206 v Pakistan 39-1

Gul celebrates
Gul took all four wickets to fall in the afternoon session

Umar Gul ran through the West Indies tail for a haul of 5-65 as Pakistan bowled the tourists out for 206 on day one of the first Test in Lahore.

Shahid Nazir and Danish Kaneria made inroads into the top order after skipper Brian Lara won the toss and Gul took all four wickets in the afternoon.

Lara top-scored with 61 on the ground where he made his Test debut in 1990.

Pakistan were 39-1 in reply when bad light ended play, Imran Farhat having fallen lbw to Jerome Taylor.

The second-wicket partnership between Younis Khan - who passed 1,000 Test career runs - and Mohammad Hafeez was worth an unbroken 23 from 8.5 overs.

Pakistan made light of the absence of Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, who were banned recently after failing drugs tests.

West Indies went into the game in positive mood after reaching the Champions Trophy final in India last weekend but soon found themselves in trouble at the start of their first series in Pakistan for nine years.

Daren Ganga hung round for 40 minutes to make three but then tried to force a ball from Gul off the back foot and edged to Younis Khan at slip.

Early in the innings, though, Gul was out-bowled by new ball partner Nazir, who operated as first-change bowler in two Tests in England earlier this year.

He won a fortunate lbw decision to end a typical flurry from Chris Gayle, who made 34 off 28 balls, and then had Ramnaresh Sarwan caught at slip from an out-swinger in his next over.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul was Nazir's next victim and he could have few complaints about the leg-before decision which sent him on his way for five as he was trapped on the back foot by another swinging ball from Nazir.

Lara and Dwayne Bravo tried to mount a rescue operation, adding 44 for the fifth wicket but Bravo then played a loose shot in spinner Kaneria's second over and was caught at mid-off by Nazir for 32.

Denesh Ramdin followed for 12 before Lara and Dave Mohammed checked Pakistan' s progress with a stand of 52 in 13 overs.

Lara reached his half century with a boundary through point off Gul, only to depart in his next over when an angled delivery found the edge and keeper Kamran Akmal made no mistake.

The same combination also accounted for Mohammad, who made 35, and Gul cleaned up the tail to finish with his third five-wicket haul in Tests.
