Australia thrashed West Indies by 127 runs to win the DLF Cup in Malaysia.

In the showpiece final of the triangular series which also involved an off-colour India, the Aussies won the toss and hit 240-6 batting first.

That was a good score on a wicket that has caused problems at times, and West Indies were bowled out for just 113.

Brett Lee removed Chris Gayle first ball of the innings with a brutal yorker into his pads, and finished with 4-24, Nathan Bracken taking 3-16.

Australia's score was built around good innings from Damien Martyn and Andrew Symonds, who both hit 52 in the middle order.

West Indies' bowlers kept the brakes on throughout the innings, without taking enough regular wickets to put the batsmen under any serious pressure.

Australia, still attempting to find their most useful team ahead of the Champions Trophy, left out opener Matthew Hayden and had an unusual combination opening the batting.

Shane Watson played his shots and fell for 18, while Simon Katich lingered until the middle of the innings, making just 25.

West Indies had to do without their leading fast bowler Corey Collymore, who aggravated an existing thigh injury.

So Jerome Taylor won a recall and removed Ricky Ponting lbw for six in the 14th over.

In the 24th over, with Australia scoring slowly, Katich was caught in the deep mistiming a drive to a ball that stopped in the wicket.

Martyn and Symonds then came together and finally injected some vigour into the innings and the resultant total looked competitive, based on past scores in the series.

Michael Hussey's quick 30 not out at the death ramped his remarkable average up another notch.

The West Indies innings was a hopeless affair, best summed up by Runako Morton's 32-ball duck.

We still have work to do but we are getting there

Brian Lara

When the score hit 56-6, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Smith clubbed together to hit a few boundaries but there were 17 overs remaining when Ian Bradshaw edged Lee behind.

The Aussie paceman finished with 12 wickets in three appearances and was both man of the match and man of the series.

Ponting said: "We bowled very well and it's a very good result for us but I still don't think we have played our best cricket."

His West Indies counterpart Brian Lara said he was encouraged that his team had made the final at all.

"We still have work to do but we are getting there," he said.

"We lost two many wickets too soon. We crumbled and didn't get our act together," he said.
