WHAT THE RATINGS MEAN
10 - out of this world
9 - brilliant
8 - very good
7 - good
6 - average
5 - below par
4 - poor
3 - dismal

England fought back well with victories at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston to square the one-day series at 2-2 after being 2-0 down and seemingly lost.

With the Champions Trophy and World Cup now just around the corner, which players enhanced their reputations - and which will now be worried about their limited-overs futures?

Andrew Strauss (captain) - 8
8

Strauss deserves enormous credit for dragging a shattered team back into the series.

His captaincy was also brave and aggressive - and his batting ended the argument about whether he should be an automatic one-day pick.

Marcus Trescothick - 4
4

It went from bad to worse for the virus-ravaged Banger, as his feet stayed rooted and his form fell apart.

Will now miss the Champions Trophy and must be hoping that rest leads to recuperation and return of his former dominant one-day form.

Ian Bell - 8
8

England's best batsman of the series was also the comeback kid of the summer.

Had his confidence back and looked as elegant as any batsman on display, and now a near-certainty for the World Cup.

Kevin Pietersen - 5
5

A scratchy old series for KP, who found that Mohammad Asif had his number in almost every match.

Guaranteed a place in England's middle order for both Champions Trophy and World cup, Pietersen will nonetheless be looking to get some form back sharpish.

Paul Collingwood - 7
7

The Steady Eddie of the team. Completed his 100th ODI match in the last game of the series and continued to contribute well with bat and ball in difficult conditions.

Certain to stay in the first-choice XI.

Ed Joyce - 5
5

Not the return to the team Joyce was hoping for.

Excellent in the field, he missed a great chance at Edgbaston to get some much-needed runs on the board, and the jury remains out.

Jamie Dalrymple - 7
7

Continued the good work he put in against Sri Lanka with some gritty performances with the bat and key wickets with the ball.

Makes the long-term absence of Ashley Giles easier to bear, even if his detractors will want to see a little more flair in the future.

Chris Read -7
7

Uniformly excellent behind the stumps, and the key plank in England's much-improved fielding effort.

Often left in the lurch with the bat but showed again that he can hit out well even against the quicks.

Michael Yardy - 7
7

One of the surprise packages of the series.

Got real turn with the ball at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston, even if he doesn't quite have the physical attributes one would usually associate with a Duncan Fletcher pick.

Stuart Broad - 6
6

Showed glimpses of his much-touted promise, particularly early on in the series.

Tended to bowl too wide at times and subsequently hit around, but will hopefully learn from the experience.

Sajid Mahmood - 6
6

Battered by the Pakistan batsmen in some games, he saved his best till last with a match-winning effort with bat and ball at Edgbaston.

It was probably enough to keep him his place in the team - but doubts persist about his bowling under pressure.

Jon Lewis - 8
8

Finally given an extended run in an England side, Lewis responded with a succession of top-notch spells that gave England a chance in the games they lost and were key contributions to the matches they won.

Conditions suited his bowling perfectly, which may work against him when it comes to the swing-free conditions expected in India and the West Indies.

Darren Gough - 5
5

Steamed in with the same old enthusiasm but not quite the same pace.

His shin injury may have prevented him being dropped, although he was extremely unlucky to finish without a single wicket.

Rikki Clarke - 4
4

Looked out of his depth as a bowler and unable to contribute as much as he would have liked with the bat.

Waited a long time for this chance but will be disappointed with what he finally produced.
