Buchanan will quit after his third successive World Cup |
Australia are looking for homegrown talent to succeed coach John Buchanan when he quits after next year's cricket World Cup. India coach Greg Chappell, Tom Moody, the Sri Lanka coach and Tim Nielsen, who is head of Australia's centre of excellence, are all being linked.
And Dav Whatmore, who played seven Tests for Australia and is the Bangladesh coach, is in the running.
Allan Border said: "We've got a lot of good candidates for a tough job."
He added: "We need an Australian coach. Tom Moody, Tim Nielsen, Greg Chappell are in the mix, Dav Whatmore is now coaching Bangladesh and he was a long-term coach at Sri Lanka as well."
The Herald Sun newspaper in Melbourne believes Chappell is favourite for the job.
Chappell's India contract expires at the end of the World Cup and the Herald Sun said it is unlikely that it will be renewed by mutual arrangement with the Indian Cricket Board.
Chappell, who played 87 Tests and scored 7,110 runs at 53.86, has shown his mental toughness in India where he played a role in having former powerful captain Sourav Ganguly replaced.
